Cats – Meow Meow Meow Meow Meow

by | Apr 17, 2018 | Song of the Day

“Meow Meow Meow Meow Meow” by Cats is a game-changer. The track redefines the entire concept of experimental noise rock by altering our perception of the genre’s acceptable limits. Combining percussive minimalism with lyrical literalism, Cats creates an epic journey into the central cerebral core of the listener’s psyche.

“Meow Meow Meow Meow Meow” kicks off with a primitive drum solo patterned after Gene Krupa’s infamous work in “Sing Sing Sing.” The shifting dynamics and time signatures threaten to spin the ensemble into chaos as discordant chords cascade against a background of nihilistic fury. The lyrics are disturbingly stark, recalling the spoken-word jazz poetry of Gil Scott-Heron. The revolution is not only televised, but streamed into the mobile devices of the Millennial masses.

Recorded live in Oakland, California before a crowd of rabid, and obviously mind-altered, fans, “Meow Meow Meow Meow Meow” is included on the eight-song album, GRASP 2018. I have not been able to unearth any useful information about Cats. Apparently their background is as obscure as is the wellspring of their musical genius. The band even eschews traditional social media, choosing to germinate their followers through live appearances.

You can support deserving independent musicians like Cats by visiting their Bandcamp page, listening to their music (which, at this point, consists only of “Meow Meow Meow Meow Meow”) and downloading the track. And be sure to follow Cats on Facebook and Twitter, if they ever get Facebook and Twitter accounts. You may also support Cats, and other up-and-coming Bay Area musicians, by visiting the website of the Bay Area Girls Rock Camp and making a generous donation.
