Strawberry Jacuzzi 5-18-14
What is it about relationships? At the beginning, you feel like the king of the fuckin’ universe. By the time it ends, you feel like a bucket of puke. And why do we always picture the Other Person as a glass of milk? You stalk her on Facebook, check her Twitter feed, drive by her apartment at midnight to see if the light is on, leave old photographs in the mailbox, search for her profile on Match.com. And all evidence suggests the Other Person is having a grand time in Lincoln Park while you are at home in a dirty bathrobe. What? You don’t do any of those weird stalker things? Oh… Well I don’t either then…
Strawberry Jacuzzi explores the metaphysical and existential significance of Relationships in their new five-song EP, Strawberry Jacuzzi 5-18-14, recorded live at Chicago’s Young Camelot club. A side project, I think, of guitarists/vocalists Shannon Candy (the Peekaboos) and Nikita Word (Summer Girlfriends), the band was born of Shannon and Nikita’s “mutual need to write screamy pop songs about breakups and ice cream.”
I discovered Strawberry Jacuzzi while browsing the New Arrivals on Bandcamp. Full disclosure: I clicked on their EP cover because I think that chick with the glasses looks pretty hot. I think that’s Nikita. OK I have a thing for nerdy-looking women. I guess there are worse reasons for discovering a band, but I can’t think of one right now. The track titles give you a pretty good idea of what Strawberry Jacuzzi is all about: “Love Is For Suckers” (Love love love is for suckers / Ro-man-tic motherfuckers), “The Daves We Know,” “Ben Forgotten,” “Bucket of Puke” and “’Space’ Is Just Another Word For ‘I Don’t Love You Anymore.’”
This is Good Music. It has great energy and it’s a lot of fun. I guarantee that “Bucket of Puke” will get stuck in your head and you will find yourself singing it out loud at inappropriate times. No wait. There is no inappropriate time to sing “Bucket of Puke.”
Strawberry Jacuzzi 5-18-14 is available on Bandcamp. It’s “name your price” so there’s no excuse for not downloading all five songs. And be sure to join Shannon and Nikita on Facebook and Twitter. Happy stalking!
And check out other artists recorded at Young Camelot and available on Bandcamp!
Hey man,
As one of the dudes who runs sound at Young Camelot and recorded this venture, I appreciate the write-up. It’s nice to know that my work occasionally makes it out to the rest of the world.
Cheers,
