Mt. St. Melon – Our Underwear
Regular readers of this blog (both of them, if we include the cat) are familiar with the genre known as Underwear Music: songs that a person writes and records while sitting on their bed in their underwear following a breakup. I suppose the definition can be expanded to include the aftermath of any unsuccessful relationship, even the unrequited variety. In that regard, “Our Underwear,” by Mt. St. Melon, is about as Underwear as Underwear Music can get.
“Our Underwear” is about, well, underwear. But, beyond that, it’s about love and longing and closeness – or lack of it. Until now, I’ve never considered my underwear to be more than a gathering place that I want to discard as soon as I walk through the front door. Mt. St. Melon sees underwear as a veritable Patsy Cline torch song.
I just want to be with you but i can’t sometimes so I sew your name on my favorite pair of underwear I’d let you see but you won’t care
pulling up my shorts to hide
makin sure to wash them with tide
the stitching burns my skin I don’t know why I keep you so damn close to my heart
And, yeah, if my mom had ever caught me sewing another person’s name into my underwear, she would have called in a priest for an exorcism, even though we’re not Catholic. Either that or chained me up in the attic and told the neighbors that I was visiting relatives “up north.”
“Our Underwear,” released as a single in March, is now included on Mt. St. Melon’s new five-track EP, Simple Nouns. On a Spotify biography, we learn that “Mt. St. Melon is the solo project of Elizabeth (Harvey) Romo; which can be described as a lo-fi bedroom pop project (as generic as it might sound).” Doing our stalker thing on Bandcamp, we find that Simple Nouns is Mt. St. Melon’s “first solo music!!!!! :D” and that “Our Underwear” is “my first original song.”
I don’t know about my two regular readers, but I am very impressed by this debut EP. Mt. St. Melon displays a feel for melody, and for the human condition, that shows real promise. This is definitely an artist to watch (and to whom you should listen).

BONUS TRACK: “Lake Elsinore,” credited to Mt. St. Melon and Spencer Cohen. This is a beautiful song, released in May 2017. Enjoy!
